Signed cdv of Atherton H Stevens Jr 1st/4th Mass Cavalry who captured Richmond at Wars end. Civil War Union Army Officer. Served during the Civil War as Major of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. He became Provost Marshal of XXV Army Corps, and was the first Federal soldier to enter Richmond, Virginia upon its fall on April 3,1865. He then raised the first union flags over the Virginia Capitol building. Provost Marshall of 25th corps,On April,3,1865 led two companies of the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry into Richmond,and thus became the first federal officer to enter the Confederate capital.
