Patrick Emmet Burke (c. 1830 – May 20, 1864) was an Irish-born officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising from captain to colonel while commanding units in key Western Theater engagements. Originally from County Tipperary, Ireland, he settled in St. Louis, Missouri, and at the war's outset was appointed captain of Company K in the 1st Missouri Infantry Regiment; he later achieved promotion to major in the 13th Infantry Regiment and colonel of the 66th Illinois Infantry Regiment, better known as the Western Sharpshooters, a specialized marksman unit. Burke was mortally wounded at the Battle of Rome Cross Roads and died four days later on May 20, 1864, near Resaca, Georgia, exemplifying the sacrifices of Irish-American immigrants in the Union cause.[
