Boston bm.  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A member of the Chickering Piano Manufacturing Company family from Boston, Massachusetts, he would run the company after the death of his father in 1853. A member of the Massachusetts Militia since 1857, the concerns of the piano business prevented him from entering the fight to save the Union after the Civil War began until November 1862, when he was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 41st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The unit was sent to Louisiana to participate in Union Army operations there, and in June 1863 was mounted and re-designated the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. After the capitulation of Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863, Colonel Chickering was assigned as Provost Marshal of the city. He fell ill in the summer of 1864, and resigned due to that illness on September 1, 1864.
