United States Army Officer. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Class of 1870, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B of the 7th United States Cavalry under famed cavalry officer Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer. He was acting as adjutant to the portion of the regiment under command of Major Marcus Reno at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and was killed while crossing a ford. A popular officer, his body was recovered while under fire (Sergeant Benjamin C. Criswell of Company B was awarded a Medal of Honor for this feat). He was first buried on the Battlefield, but was removed to Philadelphia by his family. His watch (determined from its inscription) was found in Sitting Bull's campsite and was given to General William P. Carlin, who returned it to the family.
