WIA and POW at Stones River while commanding the 22nd Illinois in that battle with heavy casualties.  Lieutenant Colonel Francis Swanwick of the 22nd Illinois led the regiment until it retreated through the cedars when he was wounded in the arm and captured. As the entire command staff of the regiment was disabled in the fight, Captain Samuel Johnson assumed command of the regiment for the remainder of the battle.  The 22nd Illinois Infantry served in the 3rd Brigade under Bradley, the 3rd Division under Sheridan, and the 20th Army Corps under McCook. It was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Francis Swanwick. From 4 p.m. on September 19, 1863, to 4 a.m. on September 20, it sustained a loss of 130.   "December 31, 1862 and January 1 and 2, 1863, the Regiment was engaged in the battle of Stone river, where it lost 199 out of 342 men going into action. Lieutenant Colonel Swanwick was wounded and taken prisoner, and remained at Atlanta and Richmond (Libby) until May 1863. It is a singular fact, that at the battle of Stone river every horse belonging to the Regiment, including the Battery, was killed."After the war, Francis and Mary moved their family to Oswego, Kansas, where he was active in local government and the Presbyterian Church.
