Crosby 13th Mass Vols bm.  Neat view with Medical Sword.  He had served at the Masachusetts General Hospital and was studying medicine in Dublin and Paris. He was in Moscow in early 1861 when the War began. He returned to the US and was commissioned Assistant Surgeon of the 13th Massachusetts Infantry on 13 June 1861. He was promoted to Surgeon and appointed Brigade Surgeon on 1 May 1862. On the CampaignHe was acting Medical Director of the First Army Corps in Maryland, and was formally appointed to that post in November 1862. The rest of the War. He was reported briefly a prisoner of war at Gettysburg in July 1863. He was appointed Medical Director, Fourth Corps, Army of the Cumberland in April 1864. After the WarHe was honored by Brevet to Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on 13 March 1865 for faithful and meritorious service during the War. He was honorably mustered out of the Service on 23 October 1865. Known as J. Theodore Heard, MD, he was a "prominent physician" in Boston - from 1866-72 on the staff of Massachusetts General - and was active in charity work, including as a member of the Board of the Perkins School for the Blind from 1876 to his death.
