Rare CDV by Whitehurst of the battle torn flag of the 2nd Wisconsin Vols. damaged at Gettysburg.   Ex Carlile collection  "The first image (a carte de visite), below, shows the regimental flag carried into the Battle of Gettysburg by Sergeant Philander B. Wright of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. It was photographed by M. J. Powers of the Whitehurst Gallery, 434 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C. (Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War Photographs, Library of Congress DIG-ppmsca-67830)."Appointed Color Sergeant just days before the Battle of Gettysburg... Sgt. Wright, bearing the National Colors, charged forward into Herbst Woods on McPherson Ridge just west of Gettysburg [on July 1, 1863, the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg], leading the other men of the 2nd Wisconsin. Two bullets passed through the crown of Philander Wright’s hat, barely missing the top of his head. A few steps further, a third bullet pierced the flagstaff and passed through his side. Despite his wounds, he continued the charge, deeper into the woods.
