Fredericks NY bm.  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a successful immigrant businessman and enlisted in the New York Volunteer Infantry in April 1861. Commissioned as a Captain in Company I, of the 7th New York Infantry Regiment, he remained with the 7th through all it’s engagements rising to Colonel in command. At the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 11-15, 1862, being wounded he kept the field and held the culvert over the railroad to the last, with his brave regiment. After the 7th New York Infantry Regiment was mustered out of service on May 8,1863, he was offered command of the 52nd Infantry but refused when appointed by the Governor of New York to assist in the reorganization of the New York Veterans Volunteer Infantry. The reorganization was discontinued when not commissioned and the men enlisted transferred to the 178th Infantry on October 14, 1863. For his distinguished service during the war, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
