Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he received authority to raise a regiment in New York City and was commissioned Colonel in command of the 127th New York Volunteer Infantry. In July 1862, his regiment was transferred into the 54th Infantry and served in the defenses of Washington D.C. From September 1862 to May 1863, he was placed in command of the Division, for the Department of Virginia, participating in actions at Folly and Morris Islands, South Carolina. In mid 1864, he was sent to the Coast Division, Department of the South as part of the Union effort to secure the Savannah and Charleston Railroad lines from the Confederates. After the Battle of Charleston, South Carolina, on November 28, 1864, he was placed in command the city and served as Provost Marshall until the end of the war. For service and merit, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on June 30, 1865.
