Exceedingly rare image of a what is most likely a Freed or Runaway Slave young man who is now working for the Sutler to the 41st Illinois Volunteers.  Named as "Sutlers Pet" the young man is shown holding a dog while a Rooster perch's on the Chair he is sitting in.  Many times these fugitives from the South would work for Union Officers or other entities during the War and images of them are very rare.  Some of the famous runaway slave images have recently gone over $30,000 in auctions as their popularity seems to have been rekindled of late.
