Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. In May 1861, he was appointed Colonel of the 2nd New York Infantry Regiment and took part in the Battle of Big Bethel. He served under Major General George McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign and for gallantry at the Battle of Malvern Hill, he was promoted to Brigadier General in September 1862. General Carr participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and distinguished himself at the Battle of Gettysburg, when he held his position with his troops after being wounded. He commanded 3rd division III Corps in the autumn campaigns of 1863 and a garrison of the Army at the Appomattox Campaign. In March 1865, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers for his leadership and dedication to service. After the war, he became a manufacturer and served as the Secretary of State of New York, 1879 to 1885.
